Finding The Right Rat Food

Like any animal, rats deserve the best, healthiest, tastiest food. Basically the most awesome food. But what type of food checks all of these boxes? Let’s learn more about rat supplies, including the food you should be giving your buddy.

Different Kinds of Rat Food

Let's face it. We all know that there are tons of different options of rat food on the market. And sometimes it gets confusing on which one to pick; we get it. Pellets are definitely the most common. Pellets (they also come in block form) contain the daily nutrients your rat needs to stay in tip-top shape. Medleys are a cool choice, too. They'll contain a bunch of yummy stuff, and sometimes extra vitamins, which is a total added bonus. Hint: look for medleys containing linseed. It promotes healthy skin and will make their coats looking super shiny... a total confidence booster.

What to Look For

If you're feeding store-bought food? Read the label. Make sure sugar content is low. No added molasses, syrup, sugar. Zilch. Any added sugar can lead to overeating (we don't blame you, rats... we'd overeat anything sweet if it was given to us, too) and obesity. Look for food that contains only natural ingredients, offers a balanced diet, is highly palatable and supports digestive health. Healthy rats = happy parents.

What Else Can I Feed My Rat?

All kinds of things! Actually, we encourage a mix up. No one likes boring. Rats love veggies, fruits, and fresh foods. Whole grain pasta, anyone? So next time you whip up a great meal, share some with your bud. They'll probably give you a kiss. No, seriously... they'll probably give you a kiss. Rats are super loyal, super caring animals. Building your relationship with treats will only make it stronger.
