Nettle is perfect for your rabbits and guinea pigs!
Small Pet Select really advocates for lots of diet variety. But, that variety has to be the right stuff. And we love nettle for diet variety. Nettle is a favorite rabbit herb and guinea pig herb. But why?
Nettle is known for its anti-inflammatory properties (nettle interferes with the production of prostaglandins). All kinds of problems are inflammatory conditions (if you think about it). Everything from arthritis to urinary tract problems and upper respiratory infections are inflammatory conditions... even allergies! Chemicals in nettle leaves may interfere with the nerve pathways that communicate pain, making soreness and stiffness less painful.
Nettle supports the immune response in general and is also astringent. This astringent property helps keep the urinary tract free of bacteria and may help keep chronic urinary tract and bladder problems under control.
Nettle is also high in protein, with a good calcium-phosphorus ratio, and contains a lot of silica (the thing in greens that helps keep teeth ground down). It’s also full of histamines and serotonin and is a source of iron and vitamins A, B-complex, C, D, and K. It is used as a detoxifier and makes a terrific all-around healthy forage for rabbits and guinea pigs.
That’s a lot of good stuff packed into one herb! Your rabbits and guinea pigs might not care about all of those benefits, but we sure do.
Adding nettle as a forage and interest food keeps your animal from becoming bored. So try it out! Your small pet will go gaga.
